How to Keep Surf Motivation Through the Cold Months

Updated: Feb 10, 2022

It can be hard to stay motivated during the winter months, so we have come up with some life hacks to get you through the next couple months!

If you surf in the winter, you will know what we mean when we say ‘Crab hands!’

No, it's not some sort of crustacean infection, it's when your fingers go so numb that you can't put them together anymore and you end up walking around with what look like mutated claw hands!

Get a Good Wetsuit

Literally nothing makes winter surfing worse when you have a holey suit or have to wear TWO wetsuits at the same time.. (Believe me we've been there ..)

Nothing can compare to having a wetsuit though the winter than makes you feel like your wearing a duvet. 5 - 6m chest zip suits are recommended for the winter months here in the UK, (they can be expensive) but it will mean that you can surf more comfortably and for longer! Plus if you have an extra suit, you can rotate them so you always have a dry one to put on!

Drink Something Hot

Pre-surf power Tea! It will warm your belly up before jumping in the sea, plus tea acts as a diuretic, So you can occasionally warm yourself up as you go, just don't forget to rinse your wetsuit when you get home - filthy, I know but who doesn't pee in their suit? hehe

Surf with Friends

Find a buddy who loves surfing too! Sometimes it can be hard to leave the comforts of a central heated home when it's bitter cold outside. So it's always good to have someone you can call or someone that will ping you when the waves are on! - head to Surf Senioritas on FB, they have a great community page where you can reach out to find fellow cold water frothers in your area!

Hot Water Bottles

Are a MUST if you're getting changed in a car park in winter. You can wrap your clothes in it so they are warm to put on when you get out, and then stuff it up your jumper for the drive home - So toasty! We are never seen without on a winters day!

Set yourself a goal

Sit down and write down 5 things you want to achieve over winter, you could even make a poster for your wall! - Go into the water with an intention, even if the waves are bad, tell yourself ‘I'm going to catch 3 waves’ your commitment will pay off and your be loving the winter season soon! It doesn't matter how small the goal, actually the smaller and more achievable the better!

Its important to remember that it doesn't matter if you don't feel like it and/or its a huge storm out there. You don't have to surf everyday please don't put pressure on yourself that it makes you feel bad. We surf for fun and if its not looking fun and a duvet is looking way more that days vibe that's absolutely allowed! Its hard to keep the stoke alive when its 50mph winds and sideways rain!
