Overpowered; Overwhelming; Overwhelming. You can never be too rich or too thin or too handsome, says a popular Japanese TV commercial from the 1980s that has been making the rounds of social media this week. The commercial was by Ayumi Hamasaki, and the tagline was "Hallelujah!" The ad was created by an ad agency and paid for by a mobile phone company. It was aired in the weeks after Hamasaki's album, Guilty Pleasure, was released in 1990. Guilty Pleasure sold more than 2 million copies in Japan alone. It was ranked by Billboard magazine as the best-selling Japanese album of all time in 2012. “Everyone was saying how powerful and awesome she was,” C. D. Cooper, a former Creative Director for the New York agency Mother, told The Hollywood Reporter. “She was not just a singer. She was a force of nature.” The song, he said, was “a power ballad of sorts. It was a huge hit in the U.S.” on a list of Ayumi's biggest hits. As for what exactly Ayumi's "power ballad of sorts" was, Cooper didn't say. But he did tell THR that it was "the most powerful song I ever worked on.” Cooper's comment surfaced amid some online furore over Hamasaki's appearance in an advertisement for a company called Nintendo. Ayumi is the face of the Nintendo game series Just Dance, which has earned more than 200 million users and sold more than 40 million consoles worldwide. The ads started running in July 2019 and will continue airing for the next few months. Along with the game, Nintendo will also feature Hamasaki's music in its next gaming device, the Nintendo Switch. The console, announced in March 2018, is due out next year. The Just Dance game is available now. Hamasaki's last appearance in a Nintendo commercial was a Pachinko (pachislot) advertisement in 2012. In 2006, when the company announced it would produce a video game based on one of the singer's most popular songs
